If you’ve been in business for any length of time, you likely know that it’s all too easy to get stuck in doing the same old-same old, especially if you are having a modicum of success.

Once you find one or two things that work reasonably well, you can quickly fall into the trap of simply repeating these for the rest of your business life.

While staying on familiar ground may be the safest option, it’s not very exciting to contemplate. And in reality, it’s not really safe at all. Here’s why:

Business, just like life, is very unpredictable. If you only have one or two ways of generating leads for your company, you could be in big trouble if the rules change.

For example, when the Do Not Call lists were put into effect several years ago, many businesses that relied solely on telemarketing as a way of reaching potential customers suddenly saw their revenues sink. Many went out of business entirely.

But here’s the more important thing: even if the rules never change and you go on using one or two tried and true marketing methods for the life of your business, unless you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, you will never know what is possible.

It’s being willing to step out of your comfort zone that will allow you to ask yourself questions like these:

~ What if I could go from a five-figure business to a six-figure business, or even seven figures?

~ What if I could charge quadruple the fees I am now getting for my services?

~ What if I could literally create money on demand, just by sending out an email?

Those are the kinds of questions that can really get you fired up about your business! So how do you make those first moves to get out of that comfort zone? Here are three steps to make the process go more smoothly:

1. Accept that you will feel a certain amount of discomfort or even outright fear, as you proceed. In fact, if you are not feeling uncomfortable, then you are not making a big enough move.

2. Identify your action step, which will be uniquely yours, depending on where you are in your business. Maybe it’s hosting your first teleseminar, speaking at a live event or producing your own internet radio show. Whatever your action step is, it should make you feel excited and scared at the same time. Make sure you also identify the clear outcome you desire from taking this action.

3. Get the right support as you proceed. Don’t go it alone. Even though you love them, many times close family and friends simply do not understand what you are trying to accomplish. Enlist the support of entrepreneurial-minded colleagues or consider joining a high-end mastermind group facilitated by a knowledgeable leader who has done what you want to do.

By being willing to move into the ocean of the unknown, the boundaries of the possible open to your exploration. Success is not guaranteed, but real growth, both for you and your business, is inevitable. Set sail!

If you’re not feeling uncomfortable, you’re not making a big enough move. Excellent point. Let’s shake up and change up the way we’re connecting with prospects. All it takes is observing others and your own great ideas will be sparked. Thanks Ellen.

You are most welcome Rhonda…yes, there is a quote that says “When you hear the sound of the cannons, move toward them, not away.” It’s only in embracing our own fears that we learn to truly shine.
