When starting to build an e-mail list, it’s easy to make crucial mistakes that can very well stop you from being as successful as you could be in your business. In Part One of this two part article, I reveal five of the ten most common and deadly list building mistakes newbie marketers make and how you can avoid them.
Mistake #1 – You Never Begin. This seems almost too basic, but many people become overwhelmed and confused when they think of building an email list, as they think they will have to put in too much time and effort. Plus, many people are confused as how to begin.
The Fix: By starting now, and concentrating on just one simple method, such as article marketing, your list will begin to grow. Remember, your list is your most valuable business asset. Start right now!
Mistake #2 – Trying Too Many Techniques at Once. Many newbie marketers try to implement too many list building techniques all at one time. You will quickly burn out and will never get the results you desire.
The Fix: Choose just one basic e-mail list building method and take action on it every single day. Concentrate on mastering one method before moving on to the next.
Mistake #3 – Beginning with Advanced List Building Techniques. Many new marketers are tempted to begin with more advanced list building techniques, such as pay per click, paid banner advertising or attempting to organize a complicated joint venture event.
The Fix: Pick a proven, low risk strategy such as writing articles and submitting them to several article directories, to establish a solid foundation for your list building efforts.
Mistake #4: Failing to Master One Method Before Starting the Next. Until you have fully implemented your first list building strategy and are seeing results, it’s useless to move on to the next, as your second strategy is unlikely to work either.
The Fix: Give your first list building method time to work by sticking with it long enough to see results.
Mistake #5 – Not Taking Action Daily to Build Your List. List building is a marathon, not a sprint. And even though you can employ so called “Big Bang” strategies to add thousands of names at once, your list building, at least to start, is best done methodically and consistently.
The Fix: Make a business appointment with yourself every day and put it on your calendar to take action on a specific list building strategy.
In Part Two of this article, I’ll discuss five more deadly list building mistakes and how to fix them.

Had to come back to read the first top 5 Mistake Newbie Marketers Make with List Building. Love the way you provide quick fixes to issues faced by many newbies like me. Thank you for the two part article.
Ellen, you definitely laid out all the mistakes. When most marketers ask me about list building, I find one of their biggest problems to be, they started building their list and then they gave up on it because it was taking to long and not building quick enough.
That and not being able to build a squeeze page, but I just wanted to say, for those of who who want to build a list, do it NOW, don’t wait till next year, it’s the easiest way to succeed in internet marketing, this and launching your own products.
Think of it this way, each year should accumulate to atleast 10,000+ subscribers or 800 – 1,000+ a month average, and each subscriber is worth about $1 – $2 each, isn’t that a GOOD enough reason to spend a year building your list?! It takes time, but pays off – Start today
