I don’t care what anyone tells you…if you don’t have a Twitter account, you are about to be hopelessly left behind. Run…better yet, dash madly to the nearest computer and get an account…now, this second, even if it means you have to stop reading this post for a few minutes. After you have gotten your account, come back and finish reading.
…OK, so you’re back. Now what?
Well, the first thing you want to do is to follow me. Just click on my Twitter page and when you get there, simply click on the Follow button underneath my picture. I’ll be sure to follow you back. Go do that right now.
The next thing you should do is to post a picture of yourself on your Twitter page, instead of leaving that ugly little default graphic up there. So get someone to shoot a digital pic of yourself and upload it to your Twitter page. Later on, you may want to change the default background of your page by going to Settings ===> then Designs and picking one that expresses your style. At some point, you will also want to consider having someone design a custom background for your page.
Next, write a bit about yourself in your bio and use words related to what you are interested in, so that others can find you when they search on Twitter. You can use this same search tool to find others in your targer niche to follow.
So go over to Twitter, find some interesting folks to follow and join in the conversation. The key to Twitter success is to build relationships not to blast out marketing messages to your followers.
Play around with Twitter, have some fun. And above all, connect with people. That’s what Social Marketing is all about.

Hi…
Enjoyed the read about Twitter…always learning more and more about it all…love the ’search’ information for certain words to find people that have something in common with you…and I met a very nice lady! Coooool!
Thanks…)))

Thanks, Ellen, been there, done that, a few months ago, hint by @leelefever ’s video. Took a while until the coins dropped, but then I am not a pro marketer. Just a beginner learning with @markjoyner. Got very (i) inspired by my tribe and connected up. Something sparked by the reports on the plane in the Hudson. Saw the light during #inauguration. Felt grateful, wrote an “Ode to Twitter” (share the link above).
Hallo Ellen,
A very nice blog – and I couldn’t agree more about Twitter.
I’ve just starting using it to connect with interesting people who run good websites. So far it’s been a great experience … with the only negative being the number of people who seem to only be interested in building numbers.
Personally I look at every website –
and give feedback to those that are good.
Like this one!
Best wishes from Hamburg
